The Quote Colors extension for Mozilla Thunderbird and the Mozilla Mail & Newsgroup client adds an user interface for configuring text and background colors for different quote levels when displaying messages (up to 5 levels currently).
The settings apply to mail and newsgroups messages, either in plain text or HTML. For graphical quoting (HTML style) you can adjust the appearance of the borders around the quoted paragraphs. Some other basic message options are available, too.

This extension and the default colors are based on a tip from the Thunderbird Help site where different quote level colors were realised via userContent.css.

Quote Colors 0.2.8
Quote Colors 0.2.8 finally brings compatibility with Thunderbird 2.0 which was released recently.

Quote Colors 0.2.7 out
Just before Thunderbird 1.5 is ready for the masses, a small bugfix release of Quote Colors is ready for you to download.
The package now includes additional seven languages and fixes some smaller bugs contained in the previous version, details can be found in the changelog.
As always, please report any issues, especially if something does not work anymore or if a localization contains errors (I doubt the latter but it's quite hard for me to check).
A small note: I was quite busy the last few months, please excuse if I still did not respond to all your mails I received. I've noted all feature requests so no good idea or proposal will be forgotten. :-)

Quote Colors 0.2.6 released / New Mozilla version
This is just a small update for Quote Colors that mostly contains fixes for the message colors feature introduced in the previous version. See the changelog for details. Though there are no new features, I recommend doing an update.
Message colors are disabled by default now, so upgraders who wish to use this feature will have to enable it in the options.
Finally, the Mozilla version of Quote Colors has been updated and contains the same features as the Thunderbird one. Please report any bugs with this version, thanks!

Quote Colors 0.2.5 released
This new version only contains some of the new features I wanted to include in a new release, so I would name it 0.2 and a half (0.2.5 in Mozilla's version numbering ;-) ).
Though, there may be some new options that are interesting for you, I especially like that quote colors now are printed with the message. Quotes in HTML messages are colored again and there's the possiblity to collapse borders in graphical quoting. Plus, there are a few options that change the appearance of your messages which are not related to quotes but should be useful. That's almost all, please see the changelog for a more complete list.
Enjoy, and please report any problems or share your thoughts with me, thanks!
PS: the documentation will be updated in the next days. All of the new features should be easy to understand but don't hesitate to ask if something is unclear.
Known issues and limitations
- Color quote levels when replying to messages (compose window) would be a nice addition, but it's not as easy to implement as in the message window. Maybe it's not even possible with a extension, I'm not sure atm. Don't hold your breath for that feature.
- when using this extension, the quote color defined in Tools > Options > Display will not be used (this is by design, there's no need for it)
- only five quote levels will be colored, after that the colors will stay the same as in the fifth one! I think it's a rare case but maybe there will be some kind of automatic that deals with this in a new release.
- when displaying pure HTML messages as plain text, quote levels won't be colored
